Ancient Art Refined

Were it not for bronze, civilization would look very different.
History virtually begins with the Bronze Age, when humankind discovered how to melt two metals together to create a substance harder and more enduring than could be found in nature. Bronze preserved for posterity the cultures of Mesopotamia, Sumeria, Troy and ancient Egypt.
While casting bronze is not a lost art, there are relatively few bronze foundries active in the U.S. One of the largest is American Bronze Foundry in Sanford.

Sanford Foundry Lands Vatican Job

The American Bronze Fine Art Foundry here will eventually produce 3,000 bronze busts of the Virgin Mary, to be sold for $15,000 each. Another 1,000 made of silver are priced at $30,000 each. Within a few weeks there will be full-time armed guards here because 25 of the Madonna statues will be cast in gold and later offered at $1 million each. More than 1,500 pounds of gold will be brought in and used under intense security, since each of the statues will require 1,000 ounces of gold.

"We wanted something special and a little abstract," Walsh said of the statute created by Paul George of American Bronze Art Foundry in Sanford. "I wanted something to acknowledge our alumni's achievements and their many contributions toward making a positive difference in their communities. Hopefully, it will encourage others to do the same. It's certainly been a big part of my life."
